Statement from Dame Glenys Stacey

As announced last year, Dame Glenys Stacey will be standing down as Chief Inspector of Probation. Her appointment will end on 31 May 2019.

Dame Glenys said: “It has been a privilege to do the job. I have seen at first hand the life-changing potential of probation and youth justice services at their best, and the life-sapping and sometimes fatal consequences when the services do not work as intended. Good quality probation and youth offending services are so important not just to those receiving them but to society as a whole.

“During my tenure, I have overseen major changes to the way we inspect. We look at the quality of work in cases and now compare it to probation and youth offending standards we have agreed with the profession. We look at how the work is delivered as well, and the wider context, to be as clear as possible about where things need to improve, locally and nationally.

“As a team we at HMI Probation set out to shine a light on these important services, with the aim of driving improvement wherever needed. I would like to thank all staff for their hard work and commitment and commend them on a job well done. I am sure the Inspectorate will continue to go from strength to strength.”
