What the job entails

A career at HM Inspectorate of Probation is varied and challenging. As an inspector or assistant inspector, you will be part of a team working to improve probation and youth offending services through professional and rigorous assessment.

You will help us to build up a picture of each service by conducting interviews and focus groups with senior leaders, staff and service users; analysing samples of cases and other sources of data; and writing/contributing to inspection reports. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to thematic inspections that address key national issues.

Mentoring scheme

We are pleased to launch our Mentoring Scheme for inspection staff vacancies. All applicants for Assistant Inspector and HM Inspector posts who are invited to attend our assessment centre will be contacted by one of our recruitment mentors. Our recruitment mentors are current members of our inspection staff team. They will offer one-to-one support and guidance to candidates throughout the assessment centre process and be on hand to answer questions – about the recruitment process or the job role itself. We are committed to recruiting the best people into our organisation and to enabling candidates to give their best throughout the recruitment process.

Personal Assistant to HM Chief Inspector and Heads of Programme

The Personal Assistant to the Chief Inspector and Heads of Programme will work closely with the Chief Inspector, Heads of Programme and Senior Advisor to the Chief Inspector.

We offer flexible working and the successful candidate will be based at the Justice Centre or satellite office closest to their home, though there may be occasional travel for meetings and the annual staff conference.

The PA is responsible for providing a high level of executive support to HM Chief Inspector of Probation and the Heads of Programme for inspections (Probation, Youth and Thematic).

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the diary for the Chief Inspector and three Heads of Programme, ensuring appointments are kept up to date and that information and documents for meetings are provided to the Chief Inspector and where necessary, the Heads of Programme, in a timely manner.
  • Book all travel and accommodation required, researching all options and making recommendations as to the most suitable.
  • Process expenses on behalf of the Chief Inspector.
  • Work with the senior advisor to process correspondence and queries addressed to the Chief Inspector or HMI Probation.
  • Make arrangements for meetings, conferences and senior management team events as required.
  • Prepare monthly senior management team meeting agendas and electronic packs. Along with the senior advisor take accurate minutes of meetings, taking into account the personal style of the Chief Inspector, and produce notes in a timely manner. Attend other meetings as required.
  • Monitor actions arising from meetings and ensure responsible owners are accountable.
  • Act as point of contact for HM Chief Inspector with all stakeholders, officials and ministerial offices.
  • Liaise effectively with HMI Probation’s Advisory Group members, compiling the agenda and producing meeting packs in a timely manner.
  • Type letters and memos as required, to a high standard.
  • Jointly maintain shared mailboxes with specific responsibility for external and general enquiries.
  • Maintain spreadsheets and folders, such as, contacts lists and correspondence.
  • Recognise and promote diversity issues in all aspects of work.
