Current consultations

We will shortly be undertaking a review of the Expectations which we use to inspect women’s prisons. We plan to develop a new set of Expectations for women’s prisons as they have not been reviewed since 2014. We will also bring them in line with the Expectations for men in prison and our prisoner survey questions.

We recognise there have been some significant recent changes in female prisoner policy, such as the female offender strategy published by HMPPS in June 2018 and the recommendation by Lord Farmer in his review of women in prison about contact with children and families. We want the new Expectations to be based on up-to-date evidence of what works with prisoners in women’s prisons; for example the trauma-informed approach which has been rolled out across the female estate.

As part of this project there will be some consultation forums taking place. If you are interested in attending and contributing to these events, please contact Darren Wilkinson at
