On 6 January 2020, the Department of Justice (Northern Ireland) commissioned us to complete an inspection of the Police Service of Northern Ireland. This inspection focused on the legitimacy of the service and provides an update on its effectiveness and efficiency.

Revolving Doors Agency has published an analysis of government data that shows Black young adults (18-24) are significantly more likely to be brought into the criminal justice system for relatively low-level and non-violent offences, such as theft or minor drug offences. Rather than being given the support they need, they are swept away into our criminal justice system.

In November 2015, HMICFRS announced that it would inspect forces’ crime-recording practices in a rolling programme of every force in England and Wales. This rolling programme will be completed over a period of several years and will report on the progress made by forces since the 2014 crime data integrity inspection. This report sets out the findings of an inspection of Northamptonshire Police.

HMICFRS previously inspected Dorset Police’s crime recording arrangements in 2014 and issued the force with a list of recommendations for improvement. We re-inspected the force in 2019 and found that it has implemented several processes to improve its crime recording arrangements.
