In January 2023, we revisited Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to review progress against a cause of concern identified in a previous inspection. This letter provides an update on our findings.

This is the third time that HMICFRS has inspected fire and rescue services across England. Our focus is on the service they provide to the public, and the way they use the resources available. This includes: Devon and Somerset, Essex County, Gloucestershire, Humberside, Lancashire, London, Northampton, Norfolk, Nottingham, Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Tyne and Wear, West Sussex and West Yorkshire.

COVID-19, Fire & rescue services  — 

Summary In August 2020, the Home Secretary commissioned us to inspect how fire and rescue authorities in England responded to the COVID-19 outbreak and the numerous challenges it presents. Virtually, we inspected England’s 45 fire and rescue services from September to November 2020, focusing on their response during the initial outbreak of the pandemic. The

In 2019, HMICFRS commissioned BMG Research to undertake a study of the public’s perceptions of local fire and rescue services across England. The study covers the public’s views and experiences of local fire and rescue services’ activities.

Effectiveness, Fire & rescue services, Revisit  — 

During our inspection of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, in June 2019, we identified a cause of concern about how effective the service is at keeping people safe and secure from fire and other risks. We asked the service to submit an action plan setting out how it would address this cause of concern. We revisited Essex between 11 and 13 November 2019 to review progress against the action plan.
