Efficiency, PEEL  —  20 October 2015

As part of a new annual inspection of police forces in England and Wales, HMIC has published a thematic and individual force reports on the findings of inspections of policing efficiency. The reports are concerned with the question: How efficient are the police at keeping people safe and reducing crime?

Stop and search  —  20 August 2015

In March 2015, HMIC published ‘Stop and search powers 2: are the police using them effectively and fairly?’. This report looked at the progress forces had made since the previous stop and search report, ‘Stop and Search Powers: Are the police using them effectively and fairly?’, published in 2013.

Child protection  —  14 July 2015

Protecting children is one of the most important tasks the police undertake. Only the police can investigate suspected crimes, arrest perpetrators and monitor sex offenders. Police officers have the power to take a child who is in danger into a place of safety, or to seek an order to restrict an offender’s contact with children. The police service also has a significant role working with other agencies to ensure the child’s protection and well-being, longer term. This is the report of an inspection of South Wales Police.

Speech  —  1 July 2015

Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary, gave a speech at The Centre for Social Justice about the role HMIC plays in helping to promote the well-being of vulnerable people when they come into contact with the police.

Stop and search  —  24 March 2015

This report sets out the findings of an inspection into the progress made by forces since HMIC’s 2013 stop and search report and addresses the Home Secretary’s new commission for HMIC to examine the way the police use powers to stop motor vehicles and strip search people.

Data, Rape Monitoring Group  —  12 March 2015

On behalf of the national Rape Monitoring Group (RMG), HMIC has published 42 local area digests to provide a data set to enable more thorough analysis of how rape is dealt with in a particular area of England and Wales.

This inspection was designed to focus on the arrangements in place to ensure those working in police forces act with integrity.

This inspection looks at how effective police forces are at cutting crime. The public expects the police to reduce, prevent and investigate crime, bring suspects to justice and, with other services and agencies, care for victims. Victims are at the heart of this inspection and are entitled to a service from the police. This service includes regular information about their case as well as the opportunity to provide an impact statement and have their say on potential criminal justice outcomes.

The Police Act 1996 requires Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary to report each year on his assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in England and Wales. The assessment covers the full breadth of policing work inspected by HMIC throughout 2013/14, and an overview of police forces in England and Wales.
