Today, Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Constabulary published their 2016 PEEL assessments.

PEEL is HMIC’s annual assessment of police forces in England and Wales. Forces are assessed throughout the year on their effectiveness, efficiency and legitimacy. At the end of the year, all inspection findings, graded judgments and analysis, along with Her Majesty’s Inspectors’ professional judgment, are brought together to produce a rounded assessment of each force’s performance.

The scheme aims to achieve greater transparency and community involvement in the use of stop and search powers, and to support a more intelligence-led approach, leading to better outcomes. These reports set out the findings of a revisit inspection of Northamptonshire Police, which was one of 19 forces found to not be complying with one or two features of the scheme in 2015 inspections.
