Child protection  — 

Protecting children is one of the most important tasks the police undertake. Only the police can investigate suspected crimes, arrest perpetrators and monitor sex offenders. Police officers have the power to take a child who is in danger into a place of safety, or to seek an order to restrict an offender’s contact with children. This inspection reviewed the progress made in Cleveland Police since the publication of the previous national child protection inspection in 2017.

This report sets out our findings from an inspection into how effectively the police respond to and support people with mental health problems.

Child protection, Joint inspection  — 

Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, HMICFRS and HMI Probation, examined the multi-agency response to older child exploitation and children missing from home, care or education. This builds on findings from the 2016 report, ‘Time to listen’ – a joined up response to child sexual exploitation and missing children’.

Hate crime, Research, Study  — 

This research project was commissioned by HMICFRS to better understand the experiences of victims of hate crime. It provides a powerful victim perspective and complements our own inspection report on hate crime.

Criminal justice joint inspections, Hate crime  — 

Her Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services HMICFRS have undertaken two previous joint inspections of the handling of disability hate crime casework. This inspection focused on progress made in response to findings from the previous two reports.

Crime recording  — 

In November 2015, HMICFRS announced that it would inspect forces’ crime-recording practices in a rolling programme of every force in England and Wales. This rolling programme will be completed over a period of several years and will report on the progress made by forces since the 2014 crime data integrity inspection. This report sets out the findings of an inspection of Cleveland Police.

Hate crime  — 

Crimes motivated by hate can have an intense, enduring and sometimes devastating effect on victims and communities. This report sets out the findings of a 2017 inspection into the police’s response to hate crimes.

Child protection, Joint inspection  — 

This report is about the third joint targeted area inspection programme, which began in May 2017 and examined ‘the multi-agency response to older children who are living with neglect’. This report considers the most significant learning from six inspections of local authority areas with a focus on the neglect of older children.

Correspondence, Force management statement  — 

On 28 June 2018, Sir Thomas Winsor, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary, wrote to all chief constables acknowledging receipt of their force management statements, and outlining the next steps.
