In August 2020, we were commissioned by the Home Secretary to inspect how fire and rescue services in England are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. This letter from HMI Zoe Billingham to Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service sets out our assessment of the effectiveness of the service’s response to the pandemic.

Effectiveness, Fire & rescue services, Revisit  — 

During our inspection of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, in November 2018, we identified a cause for concern about the service’s fire engine availability and whether its firefighters had the necessary safety critical skills to respond to emergencies. The service submitted an action plan setting out how it would address the cause for concern. This letter sets out the findings of our second revisit to review progress.

Data, Fire & rescue services, FRS methodology  — 

In 2019, HMICFRS commissioned BMG Research to undertake a study of the public’s perceptions of local fire and rescue services across England. The study covers the public’s views and experiences of local fire and rescue services’ activities.

This consultation is now closed. This plan provided details of HMICFRS’s proposed fire and rescue services inspection programme for 2020/21, and asked for your views on whether the right areas of fire and rescue services’ activity are covered.
