A joint view of the Criminal Justice Chief Inspectors on the Criminal Justice System’s response to COVID-19

HMICFRS, HM Inspectorate of Probation, HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate and HM Inspectorate of Prisons conducted inspections of our respective agencies’ responses to COVID-19.

We looked at how the Criminal Justice System (CJS) reacted immediately after the first national lockdown from 23 March to 10 May 2020, and how the system has managed since.

This report provides a cross-system view from these inspections. It highlights the successes, the challenges and the continuing impact the CJS faces.
