Royal Gibraltar Police

Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary (HMI): Matt Parr is HMI for Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP)

About Royal Gibraltar Police

RGP is the oldest Commonwealth police force outside the UK, formed in 1830.

There are approximately 250 police officers in the force. They have support from a small number of police staff who are employees of the Gibraltar Government. It is not the only policing body in Gibraltar. The Gibraltar Defence Police guards and enforces law on Ministry of Defence installations in Gibraltar.

The force covers an area of approximately 2.6 square miles and has a diverse population of 32,000.

HMICFRS’s role in inspecting this force

HMICFRS inspect RGP at the invitation of the Gibraltar Police Authority.

RGP is a relatively small force and its capacity and capability have limitations. For this reason, we do not compare it directly with other forces or grade it

We ask the questions that we believe the public wish to have answered, and publish our findings, conclusions and recommendations. We use our expertise to interpret the evidence and make recommendations for improvement.
