North Yorkshire is England’s largest, mainly rural, policing county, covering 8,320km2 and has an estimated population of 824,000 people (ONS 2018) spread across our towns and villages.

North Yorkshire is a popular tourist and cyclist destination which includes the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales National Parks, coastal hubs such as Scarborough and Whitby and the iconic city of York.

North Yorkshire attracts a significant number of visitors per year, swelling resident populations and increasing policing and partner agencies demand both in terms of visitors to our beautiful country side and into our town’s and city’s vibrant night-time economy. The county has a road network of more than 6,000 miles (one of the country’s largest) with arterial routes traversing the county. This infrastructure is a key factor in the demand placed upon the force both from increased traffic on the roads and travelling criminals linked to cross-border crime.

North Yorkshire Police has invested in new resources that enhance our visible neighbourhood offering that is focussed upon prevention and early intervention both within the physical and virtual space and we have invested in areas of hidden or emerging policing demand. Protecting the vulnerable remains our priority and drives both our approach to multi-agency working and also in how we deliver positive outcomes to those most susceptible to harm. Coming together with the North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to form ‘Enable North Yorkshire’, will drive more effective and affordable support service functions across both organisations under the direction of a single Managing Director.
