The force says...
Staffordshire Police serves more than 1.1m people across a large geographic area of 1,000 square miles. It ranges from the rural, sparsely populated areas of Staffordshire Moorlands, on the edge of the Peak District, to major urban areas such as Stoke-on-Trent (which accounts for just over 20 % of the population), Tamworth, Cannock and Burton-upon-Trent. Staffordshire includes some of the region’s busiest roads networks, including the M6.
The force has eleven local policing teams which are coterminous with local authority boundaries and other key specialist staff work within investigative and operational support directorates. Staffordshire Police works closely with emergency services, local authorities, criminal justice and health service partners to safeguard people and communities.
Demand continues to grow. For the 12 months to the end of December 2017 recorded crime has risen by 10% and calls for service by 3%. Whilst much of this is attributable to less complex crime, the force also recognises the continuing risk in areas such as child sexual abuse, gangs and youth violence, and modern day slavery.
In response to these challenges, and the financial savings the force will need to make in the coming years, the Chief Constable has initiated a change in the force’s operating model which will begin to come into effect from June 2018. This operating model will include the creation of a telephone-based resolution service for non-emergency and non-urgent incidents, an investment in neighbourhood officers prioritising prevention and early intervention, increased capacity in investigations, and a refocused response service, all focused on protecting the most vulnerable in our communities.
This new operating model will be supported by a major IT overhaul, which will replace the force’s core policing systems beginning with a new records management system by early 2019.
