The force says...

Northumbria Police is one of the largest police forces in the country, serving a population of 1.5million people. It covers a diverse area of more than 2,000 square miles from vibrant cities to isolated rural areas. It also includes areas which are amongst the most deprived in the country with high levels of unemployment.

A total of 19% of the population is aged over 65 and 29% of households (181,208) have someone with a long-term health problem or disability.

There are 3,177 police officers, 1,490 police staff and 158 police community support officers – supported by volunteers, including special constables and police cadets.

In 2017, the force received 1,054,884 calls to 999 and 101, dealt with 424,076 incidents and investigated 148,225 crimes.

Northumbria’s clear aspiration is to be outstanding in the delivery of services and protecting the public, especially those who are vulnerable; with a joined up approach that includes partners as well as the public to deliver a victim-orientated service.

The force is evolving to ensure that it is well positioned to deliver services against the changing nature and complexity of crime whilst improving engagement opportunities with its local communities.

Northumbria Police continues to develop consultation with service users, with a greater focus on vulnerability, which informs service improvements. People living in the force area feel safe, with perceptions of crime and anti-social behaviour remaining low.

Northumbria has the lowest precept of all forces in England and Wales with around 84% of total funding from central government. Consequently the force has taken the biggest financial cut of all forces in England and Wales through both the 2010 and 2015 Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) periods. Central Government formula funding for policing in Northumbria has been reduced by over 37% in real terms since 2010.

The budget for 2018/19 is £266.245m.
