How well has the force performed in our other inspections?
In addition to the three core PEEL pillars, HMICFRS carries out inspections of a wide range of policing activity throughout the year. Some of these are conducted alongside the PEEL inspections; others are joint inspections.
Findings from these inspections are published separately to the main PEEL reports, but are taken into account when producing the rounded assessment of each force's performance.
Other reports
Honour-based violence (HBV)
South Yorkshire Police is not yet prepared across all areas to protect people from harm from HBV.
The force has prepared its leadership and governance structures in order to support its ability to identify and respond to cases of HBV.
The force is prepared, in respect of its awareness and understanding of HBV, and ensures that its officers and staff recognise, understand and identify victims from the first point of contact.
The force is prepared in respect of the levels of protection to be offered to victims of HBV.
The force is not yet prepared in respect of enforcement against perpetrators of HBV. The force is not prepared to prevent offences occurring.

Police custody
Police custody in South Yorkshire had improved, and was positive overall, but the force needed to focus on improving risk assessments.
Improvements had taken place and it was encouraging that even though South Yorkshire Police was in the early stages of opening a new custody suite and closing existing buildings, it continued to maintain a reasonable standard. We noted that, of the 25 recommendations made in our previous report in 2010, six had been achieved, seven had been partially achieved and 12 had not been achieved.

Child protection
There is still important work for South Yorkshire Police to do to improve the protection of children, however there are signs of progress.
It is common knowledge that South Yorkshire Police’s approach to protecting children has been severely lacking. In September last year HMIC raised serious concerns about the way the force was approaching this kind of work, which was undermining the service it provides to children.
We carried out this post-inspection review in order to understand what progress South Yorkshire Police had made since our initial inspection, and we found there were still areas that need major improvements.
HMIC is keen to stress however, that the situation in South Yorkshire is not irretrievable. There are tangible signs that the force is improving some elements of its service to children, so HMIC is encouraged that the senior leadership of South Yorkshire Police demonstrated the determination to make improvements.
HMIC will continue to monitor South Yorkshire Police’s approach to child protection.
