Risk assessment

A structured professional judgment to help determine the likelihood of risk. Completion is intended to help police officers in the decision-making process on appropriate levels of intervention in relation to:

  • reducing the risk posed by serious offenders;
  • increasing the protection available to vulnerable people; and
  • improving how ‘risky’ locations (such as crime hotspots) are identified and managed.

There is no standard risk assessment model for the British police service. But risk assessment should be guided by the national decision model (NDM).
