Police and crime commissioner (PCC)
An elected entity for a police area, established under section 1, Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011, responsible for securing the maintenance, efficiency and effectiveness of the police force for that area. Their role includes:
- appointing the chief constable and dismissing them if necessary;
- holding the chief constable to account for running the force;
- setting the police and crime objectives for their area using a police and crime plan;
- setting the force budget and precept;
- contributing to the national and international policing capabilities set out by the Home Secretary; and
- bringing together community safety and criminal justice partners to make sure that local priorities are aligned.
