Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division is a good example of the CPS working effectively

A report from Her Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate (HMCPSI) has found that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division offers a model of best practice for the rest of the CPS.

Despite working on some of the most challenging casework in the CPS, the Division delivers high quality cases. Inspectors praised the Division for its casework quality and the focus on identifying and sharing good practice alongside lessons learned, including with external agencies. The Special Crime unit’s approach to supporting the victims of the Hillsborough Enquiry was highlighted as another example of strong performance. Inspectors also found excellent financial management across the division, which operates within its budget.

Despite the positive findings, the report highlights the need for the Division to provide better and timelier updates to key contacts such as the Director of Public Prosecutions and Attorney General’s Office, so they are always aware of cases coming from the Division which will generate media attention. Inspectors also recommended that the Division improve how it shares its specialist knowledge with the rest of the CPS and its partners.

Commenting on the report, HM Chief Inspector Kevin McGinty, said:

“Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division is a good example of the CPS working effectively and to a high standard. Senior leaders and all those in the Division deserve credit for their commitment to high standards and continuous improvement. I hope this report will contribute to sharing best practice both within and outside of the CPS.”
