North Wales PEEL 2015

Other inspections

How well has the force performed in our other inspections?

In addition to the three core PEEL pillars, HMICFRS carries out inspections of a wide range of policing activity throughout the year. Some of these are conducted alongside the PEEL inspections; others are joint inspections.

Findings from these inspections are published separately to the main PEEL reports, but are taken into account when producing the rounded assessment of each force's performance.

Police custody

Police custody in North Wales had improved and was generally positive.

The report recognises a range of achievements by North Wales Police in its custody provision. These included improvements to custody buildings and a reduction in the number of people with mental health problems who were taken into police custody. It makes a number of recommendations to the force and the police and crime commissioner concerning the comparatively small number of areas where outcomes for detainees were less good, to help the force address those as well. These included recording the use of force and requests for alternative accommodation from local authorities for children facing detention in police custody. We expect an action plan to be provided in due course.
