Policing in austerity: One year on
In the October 2010 spending review, the government announced that central funding to the police service in England and Wales would be reduced in real terms by 20 percent in the four years between March 2011 and March 2015.
HMIC’s Valuing the Police programme has tracked how forces have planned to make savings to meet this budget reduction. This report contains the findings of the second year of valuing the police inspections.
The thematic report, Policing in austerity: One year on, found that police forces across England and Wales had risen to the financial challenge of the spending review, cutting their spending while largely maintaining the service they provide to the public; but HMIC had some concerns about whether all forces had transformed their efficiency to the extent that this could be sustained through the next three years (and into future spending reviews).
