HMIC associates are usually recruited for their specialist, sometimes scarce, skills and/or knowledge, and then added to the associate register. As a need arises, associates are invited to join HMIC teams on a contract basis, to work on specific projects. These contracts are frequently short term, varying from a few days to several months.
Associates go through a fair and open recruitment process. Successful candidates then undergo pre-employment checks, which include taking references, and security, health and identity checks.
An HMIC associate does not receive a retainer and is paid only if they are engaged on a specific project or piece of work. Selection to the register is not a guarantee of work.
