HMCPSI has a statutory duty to independently inspect the work of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). Our work is fundamental to improving the criminal justice system and help maintain public trust.

The Attorney General requested HMCPSI undertake a rapid inspection of CPS action in the Calocane (Nottingham) case.  We commissioned and commenced the inspection on 31st January and our findings are published in the report today.

HMCPSI has conducted a follow-up inspection into the CPS’s handling of custody time limits. The inspectorate found that although there was some evidence of good practice, two of the recommendations made in the 2021 inspection report have not been fully embedded.
